Me, horrified: Wait. DO YOU KNOW WHAT NAPSTER IS?

@zacharius I actually have trouble when people describe themselves as any type of person. I worked in tech for over a decade but I never identified as a "computer person". I think it's because it encourages thinking of these things as innate when really I believe they're about actions taken over time. And to label me as a "computer person" would diminish the effort involved, as if I were born with some natural computer brain.

I agree with you; people can and should learn basic computer skills.

Wait But Why's article on Neuralink makes me optimistic about the future in general. waitbutwhy.com/2017/04/neurali

Mastodon question: did all the toots in that thread show up on my timeline or just the top one? What's the protocol for marking the start of a thread?

All in all the tech should take us right up to the Singularity after which all bets are off.

Another chunk of historic advancement was due to improvements in person to person communication. And we've also reached (forgive the expression) peak Microsoft Office. If Elon gets Neural Link going then we should also see another technological boom as it would break down the part of "The Mythical Man Month" due to communications overhead. If Elon can't get it working, perhaps post-understanding tech will make it hapen.

BUT I'm optimistic about the future of technological advancement. As we get into the era of Software 2.0 and post-understanding in general it will fuel startling advances in almost every field.

After reading @nindokag 's opinion yesterday about technological stagnation I remembered about this post-understanding stuff and I thinks it's bigger than people realize. Moore's law isn't tapering off.. it's over. And a large chunk of technological gains in the last century are due to increasing computation. Thus, we're seeing broad technological stagnation as a consequence.

On the topic of post-understanding, here also is Andrej Karpathy on "Software 2.0"

Does anyone remember the article that coined the term “post-understanding” referring to the next era of AI designed solutions that are verifiably correct yet incomprehensible?

Is there a way to reply and also have it show up for my followers? Do I just boost my own toots or is that frowned upon?

Of all the recent challenges to my sense of identity, the most surprising is realizing I love spreadsheets too much.

Hmm. So I'm looking to buy some stuff on amazon. Should I use any smarter shopping add-ons? Any other suggestions to save money, or whatever? :/

on my way to work just now, passed solo guy holding "trump 2020" flag in the plaza in SF. wanted to say something, but then i took a closer look at his expression and decided he was probably looking to start a fight. perhaps hoping to get yelled at so he could whine about intolerant liberals stopping his free speech. decided better not to interact.

maybe i shoulda asked him "why?" like, is there a trump policy that helped your life? or is it all just about Owning The Libs to you?
